Professional counselor and decorated firefighter (Oshtemo, MI), Matt holds a master’s degree in counseling from Cornerstone University (Grand Rapids, MI). He is nearing completion of a PhD in Advanced Human Behavior from Capella University (Minneapolis, MN) where he is researching humor, resilience, and post-traumatic stress among firefighters. He was given a Valor Award for multiple rescues during an apartment fire in 2008, volunteered to work the B.P. Deepwater Horizon emergency response as an off-shore hazmat specialist in 2010, and was given Counseling Excellence Award in 2012 by Cornerstone University. He teaches both graduate and undergraduate psychology, trauma, and addiction courses for Grand Rapids Theological Seminary and Cornerstone Professional & Graduate Programs online. He also works as a Program Coordinator at Mind Springs Health in Granby, Founder of Resilience Consulting, Co-Clinical Director of the North Area Peer Support Team, co-owner of Building Warriors, and resides in the hills of Winter Park, Colorado.
